Democratic Party Issues 30-Day Notice to Exit Kenya Kwanza Coalition

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has acknowledged the Democratic Party of Kenya’s decision to issue a 30-day notice to exit the Kenya Kwanza coalition. The party, which Muturi previously led before resigning in October 2022 to take up a government position, announced its intent to leave the ruling alliance due to what it described as untenable political developments.

The notice, effective from March 7, 2025, aligns with Clause 8 of the coalition agreement, which allows for termination with a 30-day written notification. Speaking during a live TV interview on March 12, Muturi confirmed he had seen the letter from the party’s leadership, signed by Secretary General Jacob Haji and Chairman Esau Kioni.

“I just saw the letter. They are at liberty to make whatever decisions they feel is in the best interest of the party,” Muturi stated, adding that the party was not obligated to consult him, as he had resigned from its leadership upon joining the government, first as Attorney General and later as Public Service CS.

The Democratic Party’s decision comes amid growing tensions within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. The party has cited dissatisfaction with the coalition’s direction, though specific grievances remain undisclosed. Despite the fallout, Muturi clarified that his role in government remains intact, stating, “I am still in government because I’m still in that coalition and, secondly, I participated actively in campaigning for Kenya Kwanza.”

This move follows a period of strain between Muturi and the Kenya Kwanza administration, particularly after he publicly criticized certain government policies, including calling for an inquiry into the rise in abduction cases—an issue he raised after his own son was reportedly targeted.

The Democratic Party’s exit also comes amid shifting political alliances, including a recent memorandum of understanding between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which may have influenced the party’s decision to reconsider its position.

As the party, historically linked to figures such as former President Mwai Kibaki and Muturi, prepares to sever ties with Kenya Kwanza, Muturi has emphasized his continued commitment to his governmental role while acknowledging the Democratic Party’s right to determine its political future.
