Four suspected bandits gunned down in Kubisera village, Igembe, Meru County, in a swift raid by a multi-agency security team following orders from Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, who had just days earlier called for escalated action against rising banditry in the region.
Acting on intelligence, the officers, part of the elite Counter Terrorism Unit, raided a makeshift camp, killing the armed suspects and recovering six AK-47 rifles, 527 bullets, and eight mobile phones.
The slain individuals were believed to be part of a notorious gang that had been terrorizing residents, prompting Murkomen’s recent directive to not only deploy more National Police Reservists across hotspot counties but also arm local chiefs after proper vetting and training.
The deadly operation is part of the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, which has so far curbed, but not eliminated, cattle rustling and violence in Meru and surrounding counties.
