Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, a 48-year-old senior official with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) based in Kilifi County, was tragically killed during a robbery at her home in Utange, Kisauni, Mombasa, on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
The attack occurred around 3 a.m. when two assailants broke into her residence by cutting the kitchen window grills. Armed with a crowbar and a knife, they fatally assaulted Abubakar, inflicting a stab wound and a head injury above her right eye.Her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan, was also seriously injured, sustaining head wounds. Despite his injuries, Hassan managed to drive his mother to Premier Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival; he remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The assailants stole electronic items, including a 65-inch television, a sound system, an iPad, and Abubakar’s mobile phone, before fleeing the scene. Local police have launched an investigation and are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrators.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the crime to come forward to aid in the investigation.This incident has raised concerns about security in the Kisauni area, with residents calling for increased police patrols to ensure community safety. The IEBC has yet to issue an official statement regarding Abubakar’s death.
