Kiambu, Kenya – February 19, 2025

Juja Member of Parliament George Ndung’u Koimburi was arraigned at the Kiambu Law Courts today over allegations of forging academic documents. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) reported that Koimburi was arrested on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, outside his home in Juja and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.

According to the ODPP, Koimburi faces six charges, including:

  • Three counts of forging academic certificates: These include a KCSE certificate from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and documents allegedly from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
  • Three counts of uttering false documents: He is accused of presenting the forged credentials to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on March 8, 2021 during his candidacy clearance.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Everlyn Onunga told the court that the alleged forgeries date back to November–December 1994 and were used to mislead authorities like the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Both KNEC and JKUAT have confirmed that the certificates in question are not genuine.

Koimburi pleaded not guilty before Hon. Mwanamkuu Mwakwambirwa. The court has set a ruling for February 20, 2025, to determine whether additional charges related to his failure to attend court summons in 2021 will be added. Previously, Koimburi had forfeited a Ksh.100,000 bail for skipping court proceedings.

Following today’s hearing, he was released on a Ksh.200,000 cash bail.

Public Reaction & Ongoing Crackdown on Forged Credentials

The case has sparked widespread debate on social media, with Kenyans calling for greater accountability among public officials. Many users on X (formerly Twitter) have expressed frustration, with one post stating, “Nilisikia ako na PhD… These politicians!!”

This case follows a growing trend of scrutiny over fake academic papers among politicians. Similar investigations have been conducted in the past by the EACC, including a high-profile case involving Taita-Taveta Governor Granton Samboja. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling corruption and fraud in public office.
