NAIROBI, Kenya — One person has died and several others sustained injuries after a bus lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles along Valley Road in Nairobi on Monday morning, causing a major traffic disruption in the busy section of the city.
Authorities said the accident occurred during the morning rush hour when the bus reportedly failed to stop and crashed into several cars, leaving a trail of wreckage along the road. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to rescue victims trapped in the damaged vehicles.
Police confirmed that one person died at the scene, while several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Multiple Vehicles Damaged in the Crash
Witnesses said the bus appeared to be moving at high speed before it lost control and ploughed into a line of vehicles along the busy road.
The impact caused significant damage to several private cars and public service vehicles, with some vehicles badly crushed. Motorists and pedestrians at the scene helped pull injured passengers from the wreckage before emergency teams arrived.
Debris from the collision scattered across the road, forcing authorities to temporarily close parts of the road as rescue and recovery operations continued.
Traffic Disruption in Nairobi CBD
The accident caused major traffic congestion along Valley Road and surrounding routes leading to the central business district.
Commuters travelling to work experienced delays as traffic police worked to clear the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow.
Authorities urged motorists to use alternative routes while emergency teams cleared the scene.
Police Launch Investigation
Officers from the National Police Service visited the scene and launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary reports suggest that the bus may have suffered brake failure, although officials said investigations are ongoing to determine whether mechanical problems or driver error may have contributed to the crash.
The body of the deceased was moved to a city mortuary as police began the process of identifying the victim and notifying family members.
Rising Road Safety Concerns
The crash adds to the growing number of road accidents reported in the capital in recent months, raising renewed concerns about road safety and enforcement of traffic regulations.
Road safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter inspections of public service vehicles and improved enforcement of traffic laws to reduce accidents on major roads.
Authorities have urged drivers to observe speed limits and ensure vehicles are properly maintained to prevent similar tragedies.
Police said more details about the incident will be released once investigations into the accident are completed.
