The late Ezekiel Otuoma

Ramula, Siaya County – The Kenyan football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the untimely demise of Ezekiel Otuoma, a former winger for AFC Leopards, who succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at the age of 31.

Ezekiel, a dazzling talent on the field, had his promising career tragically cut short in 2020 after being diagnosed with the rare neurological condition that affects muscle control and movement. Despite the debilitating disease, Otuoma faced his journey with grace, courage, and an unwavering spirit that inspired many.

His funeral, held in his ancestral home of Ramula, Siaya County, was an emotional affair, attended by family, friends, and football enthusiasts who gathered to celebrate the life of a player described as “an artist on the pitch.”

The ceremony saw a moving tribute from his wife, Rachel Otuoma, who tearfully recalled their nine years of marriage. “Ezekiel was more than my husband; he was my best friend, my confidant, and the father of my children. His laughter lit up our lives, and his strength taught us resilience,” she said amidst tears.

AFC Leopards, the club where Otuoma showcased his prodigious talent, led the tributes. In a heartfelt statement, the club said, “Ezekiel’s contributions to our team and the sport in Kenya are unforgettable. His flair, determination, and sportsmanship left an indelible mark.”

Fellow footballers and fans alike took to social media to share their condolences, remembering Otuoma as a symbol of hope and perseverance.

His return to his rural home was marked by a hero’s welcome, with villagers and football lovers lining the streets to bid him farewell. The outpouring of love and respect was a testament to the impact he had on and off the field.

Otuoma’s passing serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by athletes battling life-altering conditions. His legacy, however, will live on in the hearts of those who admired his skill, character, and resilience.

As the football community grapples with this loss, plans are underway to establish a foundation in his honor to raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease and support affected individuals.

Ezekiel Otuoma may have left the field, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. Rest in peace, our fallen star.
