Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has strongly condemned President William Ruto’s administration over the alarming rise in abductions and extrajudicial killings in Kenya. His remarks come amid growing public concern over the increasing cases of forced disappearances, with at least 82 Kenyans reported missing since June 2024.

Muturi Calls for Accountability Over Abductions

During a recent address at City Mortuary, where the bodies of two young men who had been abducted in Mlolongo were found, Muturi decried the worsening security situation. He demanded immediate action, stating:

“This is murder most foul. The country must prioritize addressing these abductions and extrajudicial killings. It is unacceptable that innocent Kenyans continue to vanish without a trace.”

Muturi also urged President Ruto to launch a public inquiry into the matter, emphasizing that unfulfilled campaign promises regarding security and human rights must be addressed.

Growing Number of Missing Persons in Kenya

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), at least 60 cases of extrajudicial killings and 71 enforced disappearances have been documented since mid-2024. Many of these cases remain unresolved, raising concerns over the involvement of state security agencies.

Muturi has called for the establishment of a commission of inquiry, including representatives from:

  • The Law Society of Kenya (LSK)
  • Religious organizations
  • Human rights groups like Amnesty International Kenya and KHRC

He insists that such an initiative is necessary to bring perpetrators to justice and restore public confidence in the government’s ability to protect its citizens.

Rising Political Tensions Over Human Rights Issues

Muturi’s remarks have intensified tensions within Ruto’s administration. Some of the president’s allies have dismissed his criticisms as political posturing, while others believe his statements highlight a wider leadership crisis.

Despite backlash from government officials, Muturi remains firm, asserting that:

“The primary responsibility of any administration is to protect lives and property. This government must take immediate action to stop these abductions and hold those responsible accountable.”

Is Kenya’s Security at Risk?

The recent surge in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings has fueled national outrage, with human rights organizations calling for urgent reforms in the country’s security sector. Citizens continue to demand justice for the victims, urging the government to honor its zero-tolerance stance on abductions and unlawful killings.

As the situation unfolds, Kenyans are watching closely to see whether President Ruto’s administration will respond decisively to these human rights violations.
